Refractive Lens Exchange

Overview

Refractive lens implantation

Using methods similar to those in cataract surgery, refractive lenses are implanted in place of the eye’s natural lens. The procedure use local anesthesia and take approximately 15-30 minutes. The new lens helps the patient focus better, allowing the patient to shift focus between distant and nearby objects.

Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE)

Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) is usually recommended to patients over 45 who wear bifocals. A standard implant replaces the natural lens with an artificial one that cannot “accommodate” (shift focus between distant and nearby objects). Exciting new multifocal and presbiopic correcting implants offer the potential to focus both near and distance without glasses.
